Step-by-step guide to becoming a sports coach

All the steps you need to become a super sports coach!

Today, many people want to get into personal coaching. However, it's important to note that certain steps are necessary before you can start in this profession. In this detailed article by AZEOO, find out how to become a sports coach who knows how to meet the needs of his clients.

A profession increasingly in demand

If there's one profession that's growing in popularity, it's that of sports coach. It's also in line with the public's enthusiasm for fitness, particularly in France.

Becoming a sports coach isn't particularly complicated, but you do need to be organized and rigorous. Here are the main stages in your career.

Get training and a diploma to get your business card back

In France today, there are a large number of diploma courses: BPJEPS, BPJEPS AGFF, DEJEPS, STAPS, etc.

The Brevet Professionnel de la Jeunesse de l'Education Populaire et du Sport (BPJEPS) is a diploma offering a number of specialties, including Gymnastic Activities for Strength and Fitness (BPJEPS AGFF). As a future sports coach, this is the most interesting course to follow. The training can be taken at any age and with no prerequisites, and lasts a minimum of 600 hours as an apprenticeship or continuing education.

The Licence Professionnelle Métiers de la Forme (LPMF ) is different from the previous license in that it requires a baccalaureate and must be taken over 3 years. There are three main licenses that will enable you to become a sports coach: the Education and Motricity license (often aimed at future EPS teachers), the Sports Training and Motor Performance license (aimed at those who want to follow professionals and high-level athletes), and the Adapted Physical Activity license (which enables future coaches to follow people with reduced mobility). In addition, there is the CQP Fitness Instructor diploma, in response to demand from sports facilities and gyms. Its advantage is that it lasts 265 hours and costs less than the BPJEPS.

Coaching without a diploma: is it possible?

Many people claim to be sports coaches, even though they don't have a diploma. Take Belgium, for example, where this status is not regulated, and you can find just about anything and everything. In France, the legal framework lays down the status, and any offender risks sanctions (fines and imprisonment).

Legal status

If you'd like to set up your own business, there are a number of steps involved. You'll find more details here.

Several types of coaching

There are many choices available to you: gym coach, outdoor coach, home coach, online coach, hybrid coach, etc. The choice is vast and will depend on your objectives and your possibilities. To cater for all these different types of coaching, there's AZEOO's personalized coaching software for all coaches.
